Professor Banji Ayoola is currently the Chairman and CEO of the HEAL Medical Group of the Eden Hill Medical Center, a Center of Excellence in Dover Delaware USA. In 2008, he was appointed as the Medical Director of the Hospitalist Program of the Kent General Hospital and the Bayhealth Medical Center in Dover Delaware. He is the Founder and Board Chairman of the AFRINAM Organization, a non political network of Africans in America
He qualified MBBS in 1969 from the University of Ibadan and after a short residency in the University College Hospital in Ibadan. He obtained a Commonwealth fellowship in Postgraduate Medicine tenable in the Middlesex Hospital of the University of London and attended the Postgraduate Institute of Medicine of the University of Exeter under Professor Dave Mattingly. In 1971 he immigrated to the USA and had his medical residency and fellowship at the University of Minnesota Hospitals Minneapolis MN USA. He was the Chief Medical Resident at the Veterans Hospital Minneapolis MN in 1975.
He is American Board certified in Internal Medicine, a Fellow of the American College of Physicians; Member American college of Gastroenterology; Fellow of the Medical College of Physicians of Nigeria, Fellow of the west African college of Physicians was Member of the New York Academy of Science .
After teaching briefly in the USA, he returned to Nigeria as the foundation lecturer and consultant in Medicine at the OAU College of Health Sciences before returning to the UCH Ibadan (1976 to 1986) where he was the Head of Gastroenterology Unit UCH Ibadan (1976-1986) a member of the University Senate and coordinator of Postgraduate Training in the Medical Department and was a member of many committees. He was the Hall Warden of the Clinical Students Hostel from 1976 to 1986 (the famous Alexander Brown Hall). Ayoola was a member of the Governing Council of the National Postgraduate Medical College of Nigeria (1982 to 1986) member of its Senate (1982 to 1988) and Acting Registrar of NMPC (1982 to 1984).
He was a consultant/ adviser to the World Health Organization both at the central level (Geneva and regional level (Afro Region); and had served as the vice - chairman of a session of experts. He was a member of the WHO expert committee on Human resources and manpower Development, and a member of the WHO Technical Advisory Committee on Hepatitis B. A founding member of the International Task Force on hepatitis B, he belongs to many international professional associations and was a Council Member of the International Association for the Study of the Liver (IASL) and President of the African Association for the study of liver diseases (AFSLD).
He was an examiner to many Universities including higher institutions in Nigeria and, Saudi Arabia both for undergraduate and postgraduate examinations. A member of many Editorial boards of National and International Medical journals and is a reviewer of manuscripts for publications for some journals including the prestigious Journal of Hepatology and Gastroenterology , Prof Ayoola has published from 1970, over 120 scientific papers in reputable medical journals and contributed to books in Medicine. He has presented numerous lectures and papers in conferences and seminars in all the continents of the world, wining many awards including an ACG blue ribbon presidential award for his presentation in the American College of Gastroenterology conference held in Baltimore in 2003.
Born to the illustrious Ayoola family of Ijeshaland, Professor (Dr., Chief) Banji Ayoola attended the Ilesha Grammar School from 1958 to 1962 passing out in Division 1 with many distinctions and attended Ibadan Grammar School briefly for his HSC before proceeding to the University of Ibadan
He was a charter secretary of the Lions International in Ibadan, President of the famous Ijesha Patriotic Klub of Nigeria, the president of the Ilesha Grammar School Old Students association of North America and a traditional chief (Saloro of Ilo-Ilesha) and Notary Public since 1979. He is a philanthropist who has donated to causes close to his heart. A devout Christian, Prof Ayoola’s hobbies include movies, reading, music and organ playing. He is blessed with very successful children including medical doctors, lawyer, engineer, accountants, financial analyst, IT consultants and students in Dentistry and Pharmacy. He is a proud grandfather.
